Samantha Calkins this year is teaching Art I half day at TMHS and Art half day at NIS.
She is excited to be part of two awesome fine arts departments!
As a Sam Houston State graduate in 2004, she landed her first teaching job in
the Cypress Fairbanks school district teaching middle school art. She then was
given an opportunity to teach in the Spring Branch district. She taught theatre,
speech and art at Spring Oaks Middle School. There she directed many after
school plays and musicals including Annie, Oklahoma and Once on this Island.
In 2008, Samantha decided to stay home for a few years to take care of her
young children. At that time she began doing contract set design and scene
painting work professionally. She designed and painted many different shows for
Children’s Express Theatre, several local churches, schools, and private homes.
Some of her designed sets, including Alice in Wonderland, Little Red, and Pinocchio
were featured at the Miller Outdoor Theatre for the Children’s Hilltop Festival and at the
Houston Children’s Museum. She also worked on musicals and stage managed shows that
were Tommy Tune entries for Spring Woods high school.
After a few years, she decided to return to teaching in 2013. Samantha was able
to rejoin the staff at Spring Oaks once again to teach theatre and art. While there
she directed more after school productions, held art shows and entered student
artwork in the Houston Livestock and Rodeo art contest. She also sponsored
Spring Oaks’ first art club and her students enjoyed trips to the downtown museums.
Last year Samantha landed a position teaching tech theatre and art here at TMHS. She
helped direct, design, paint and work on shows including Once on this Island, Drowning Girls,
and the 2016 UIL One-Act play entry, The Importance of Being Earnest. She also encouraged and
helped art students participate in Houston Livestock and Rodeo art contest and VASE, in which she had
one student make it to State VASE. She is one of the sponsors for the TMHS Art club and is the sponsor
for the TMHS Gay-Straight Alliance club.
Samantha currently resides in Cypress with her husband, Chad, and her two
boys, Nicholas (a 2nd grader) and Alexander (Kindergarten). She enjoys riding her bike
with her boys to the park, trips to the beach, and overnight camping in the east Texas piney
woods where she grew up. She also loves to volunteer at her son’s elementary
school and is an active member of her neighborhood’s mom group.
